The first reason we look to Nostradamus is because we are always seeking a concrete assurance of our relationship with God. The best way to create that relationship is to read the Bible and pray for guidance to interpret what it means. But somehow people usually find it more tantalizing to try to analyze what Nostradamus has written.
We also turn to Nostradamus because people are always full of hope that someone has a special connection with God. We all hope that God has sent us a special messenger, someone who will tell us that there is light at the end of the darkness.
People do not realize that participating in one of the available formats for Bible discussion is the one sure way to interpret what this wondrous Book tells us. And many people do not realize that if they open themselves to God’s word, as presented to us in the Bible, then each of us in his own special way is a messenger. We will know directly from God that there is, indeed, a light awaiting us. We will be that harbinger of hope.
A furor concerning the Nostradamus prophecies predictions occurred recently when a television program devoted three-quarters of its time to the unfolding of dire events, possibly culminating with the end of the world in 2012. Some experts interpreted images, including a tree, an arm with a hammer, and spiral ribbons, as representing the destruction of the tree of life with a club, and the destruction of the universe as symbolized by the spiral DNA of humans. But others view this as a crossroads coming for humanity, when we must look at doctrine versus wisdom, with the ribbons representing our ongoing energy vibrations.
This brings us to the very core of our inability to unravel the mysteries of Nostradamus and his predictions. He was so unclear when he wrote them!
Michel de Nostradamus lived in France from 1503 to 1566. He worked as a physician for the early part of his adulthood, although many historians challenge his actual medical qualifications. His wife and son died from the plague, but he succeeded in curing many others. He later remarried and sired six more children, but he spent the latter years of his life in semi-seclusion, setting down in “quatrains”—four-line poems—the prophecies that he claimed came from God. But he was very careful never to say that he had divined these prophecies.
Repeatedly over the years Nostradamus disclaimed that he was a prophet. He stated that his writings were based on his studies of prophecies made by others, such as the Mirabilis Liber. This was a volume published in 1522 containing prophecies from Christian saints and theologists. Even the title of his dominant work was simply “The Prophecies;” the words “de M. Michel Nostradamus” that followed were interpreted in those days to mean this was a work by him about prophecies, and not necessarily prophecies from him.
He so feared prosecution for heresy or witchcraft that he obscured the meaning of his quatrains by mixing in Latin, Greek, and Italian with his native French. He was also known to change-up the order of the lines in his quatrains. And when they later were set in print, each version depended upon the printer’s interpretation, so literally no two versions agreed with one another.
Today historians and theologians have made repeated efforts to decipher Nostradamus’s quatrains, but mostly they come up with predictions that just happen to fit some recent facts or events. Many believe this is a case of making his words fit history.
Those who are curious and interested in end-of-days writings can read the Nostradamus prophecies predictions, but they would do much better to read predictions that have been proven more accurate.
